Where in the World
My travel journal | Postcards from Terry
How travel has shaped me
Travel has shaped so much of how I see the world. Every place I have been has given me something different, not just in what I saw, but in what I felt and learned along the way. The more I travel, the more perspective it gives me. It reminds me that there is always more to understand, more to appreciate, and more to be grateful for.
Travel has a way of stretching your heart and your thinking at the same time. It shows you beauty in all kinds of forms, from grand scenery to quiet everyday moments. It also reminds you how much people everywhere share in common. Postcards from Terry is where I get to reflect on those experiences and share the places, people, and moments that have stayed with me long after I came home.
Where it all began
My love for travel started when I was young, on family trips with the camper in tow. Most of those early memories were camping trips, beach trips, and time spent exploring closer to home, but they planted something in me early. They gave me that first sense of wonder and the feeling that there was always something new to see, which eventually grew into all the other places travel has taken me since.
There was a sense of wonder in it, a feeling that the world was wide and full of stories, and I wanted to see more of it. Over the years, that feeling never left. If anything, it only grew stronger, and I am grateful for that because it has brought so much richness and meaning into my life.
The places and people that stay with me
I have been blessed to experience so many incredible places over the years. From France, Budapest, Prague, Austria, Germany, and Switzerland to Haiti, Nicaragua, Hawaii, Mexico, Canada, Alaska, and of course the great U.S.A., every destination has left something with me. Sailing the Caribbean and the rivers of Europe added even more depth to that journey.
Some memories are tied to a beautiful view. Some are tied to a quiet church, laughter around a table, or the feeling of standing in a place you have read about for years and finally seeing it with your own eyes. Through Postcards from Terry, I get to look back on those moments and share what stood out, what surprised me, and what made each place feel unique.
What has meant the most to me is not just the scenery, though I have certainly seen some beautiful places. It is the people and the moments of connection that have stayed with me the longest. A kind conversation. A local guide who brings a place to life. A shared smile when no common language is needed. The feeling of worship in a place far from home.
It is the stories carried in old streets, sacred places, and historic sites that have deepened my appreciation for travel in a way I never take for granted. Travel has taught me that history is not just something you read in a book. Faith is not just something you talk about. Culture is not just something you observe from a distance. When you are there, walking through it and listening and paying attention, it all becomes more personal.
Why it still matters so much
That is a big part of why Postcards from Terry means so much to me. It is not just a place to show where I have been. It is a place to share what those places have meant to me, what I carried home from them, and the perspective I hope to pass along to my travelers.
Travel has also shaped how I serve my travelers. The more I have experienced the world for myself, the more I understand that a trip is never just about getting from one place to another. It is about what the experience means to you. Sometimes it is celebration. Sometimes it is rest. Sometimes it is curiosity, connection, healing, or simply the joy of seeing something new.
I think that is one reason travel has stayed so meaningful in my life. It has given me unforgettable memories, but it has also given me greater compassion, a stronger sense of wonder, and a deeper respect for the many ways people live, believe, celebrate, and carry on traditions. Those experiences have shaped me, and they continue to shape the way I help others travel too.
Still on my horizon
There is still so much I want to see, and that is part of the joy. The South Pacific and Down Under are both high on my list, and I look forward to the day I can experience those places and share them here as well. I know there will be more lessons, more beautiful surprises, and more moments that stay with me in ways I cannot predict yet.
That is one of the things I love most about travel. No matter how much you have seen, there is always more waiting for you. More people to meet. More history to learn. More culture to appreciate. More reminders of how wide and wonderful this world really is.
As Postcards from Terry continues to grow, I hope it feels like a collection of memories, reflections, and experiences that go beyond just where I went. I hope it shows what those places taught me, what I carried home with me, and why travel has been such a gift in my life.
